About the Organization

The New Jersey Environmental Justice Alliance (NJEJA) is a People of Color (POC)-led organization dedicated to advancing environmental justice at local, regional, and national levels. NJEJA collaborates with front-line community groups, social and environmental justice organizations, foundations, government agencies, and other coalitions to develop policies and practices that support New Jersey’s most vulnerable communities.

Role Overview

NJEJA seeks an experienced and highly organized consultant Grant Writer to support our mission by crafting compelling grant proposals, securing funding, and ensuring grant compliance. The consultant will work closely with NJEJA’s Executive Team and programmatic staff to develop and implement strategies that enhance the organization’s sustainability and growth. The position will involve assisting with the development, writing, and management of proposals and related reporting requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience writing and managing grant processes for a non-profit, ideally within the social justice, environmental justice, or community-based fields.
  • Strong ability to craft persuasive, clear, and accurate written proposals and reports.
  • Experience drafting and tracking multiple grant applications from diverse funding sources simultaneously and meeting tight deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt writing style to align with the organization’s voice, mission, and community-centered approach.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively within a team.
  • Initiative-driven, with a proven track record of successfully completing projects.
  • A well-developed understanding of social and environmental justice issues and a commitment to advancing equity.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with NJEJA staff to develop, write, and submit high-quality grant proposals and narratives to secure funding, ensuring alignment with NJEJA’s mission, voice, and community-driven approach.
  • Manage the creation and submission of assigned proposals, renewals, progress reports, and other necessary documentation.
  • Write and manage between 1-3 proposals and 1-3 reports per month.
  • Develop templates and boilerplate language to be reused for proposals and reports.
  • Research and track all deadlines and specific requirements for grant submissions, ensuring that all necessary components are included in each application. For government grants, assist with completing any required forms and paperwork to ensure NJEJA’s eligibility for funding.
  • Possess a clear understanding of various funding types and utilize this knowledge to interpret funding guidelines, advise NJEJA on compliance, reporting, and other applicable requirements, and ensure adherence to key practices and legal considerations in grants administration.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Operations to manage grant submission schedules. Assist in maintaining up-to-date funder contact information, login details, and grant application and reporting timelines within the Instrumentl database.
  • Work with the Executive Team to request extensions and modifications when necessary.

Role Overview

New Jersey Environmental Justice Alliance (NJEJA) seeks a Communications & Media Consultant to support NJEJA’s advocacy and organizing work through traditional and digital media. Under the supervision of the Director of Operations, the Consultant will create graphics and copy for NJEJA events and campaigns, manage NJEJA’s social media accounts, and develop digital communications strategies to enhance engagement and amplify NJEJA’s mission.

You Are

This position is ideal for someone with strong storytelling abilities, emotional intelligence, and a commitment to environmental and social justice. A successful candidate will have experience in social media management, persuasive writing, and digital communications. They should also be highly self-motivated, organized, able to manage multiple tasks, and comfortable working both independently and collaboratively.

Responsibilities

  • Create assigned graphics, copy, recaps, and other materials for NJEJA events and campaigns.
  • Manage NJEJA social media accounts and postings, ensuring consistent and engaging content.
  • Prepare monthly newsletters and email blasts as needed.
  • Draft relevant op-eds or press releases on environmental justice issues in the state.
  • If located in New Jersey, attend and support organizational events to gather and compile real-time content (e.g., live-tweeting, Facebook Livestreams, capturing photos and videos).
  • Build digital partnerships with relevant organizations.
  • Develop and execute online organizing campaign strategies tied to NJEJA’s policy platforms and educational campaigns.
  • Monitor and analyze key metrics to assess the performance of NJEJA’s digital work and suggest improvements.
  • Work with the Director of Operations to track, manage, and complete tasks within the assigned timeframe, proactively communicating any challenges or delays.
  • Ensure alignment of NJEJA’s overall online presence and branding.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Team to draft a long-term communications plan.

Required Experience and Qualifications

  • Two or more years of experience managing social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram) for advocacy or campaign work, especially in the EJ sector.
  • Strong writing, editing, and communications skills.
  • Graphic design experience (Canva preferred)
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to social and environmental justice, collaborative processes, and the leadership of frontline communities.
  • Knowledge of the challenges faced by overburdened environmental justice communities.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience writing public-facing materials, including email blasts, social media posts, press releases, and op-eds.
  • Familiarity with digital campaign software (e.g., EveryAction).
  • Video editing and photo skills (e.g., iMovie, Premiere Rush, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop).
  • Bilingual or multilingual proficiency.

NJEJA is developing our organizing and advocacy by expanding our team to include a Law and Policy Program Manager.

Role Overview

The Law and Policy Program Manager will work closely with the Executive Director on areas including but not limited to:

  • Advancing the advocacy goals of NJEJA
  • Working in partnership with individuals and groups from historically marginalized communities
  • Collaborating with organizational partners and governmental agencies to ensure that environmental justice is centered in environmental and climate policy

The main function of the Law and Policy Program Manager will be to work in tandem with NJEJA staff, supporters, members, and others to further education, advocacy, and policies that prioritize justice and equity for New Jersey’s Low-Income Communities and Communities of Color, especially those already overburdened with pollution and at risk from climate disaster.

Core Responsibilities

This is a generalized breakdown of the types of activities the Law and Policy Manager will be asked to perform and how much of their overall time will be used in that area of activity. This may change according to the needs of the organization.

Community Engagement – 15%

  • Assist with the identification and engagement of individuals and groups in  Environmental Justice communities throughout New Jersey.
  • Interact directly with individuals and groups interested in technical assistance and/or training in key Environmental Justice and Climate Justice issues and campaigns.
  • Help develop and deliver educational resources on environmental and climate justice.
  • Engage community partners in an iterative way to provide up-to-date information to frontline communities and to get feedback on legislative and policy proposals from community-based partners. 
  • Create opportunities for community-based partners and organizations to have a seat at the table as policies are shaped and moved forward, recognizing the principle that “Environmental Justice demands the right to participate as equal partners at every level of decision-making, including needs assessment, planning, implementation, enforcement, and evaluation.” 
  • Support NJEJA members and their communities in environmental and climate campaigns.

Advocacy – 40%

  • Apply NJEJA’s environmental and climate justice lens to public policy. 
  • Remain apprised of emerging environmental and climate-related policy (at the state, federal and local levels), flagging key policies with NJEJA Staff and Board for internal discussion. 
  • Support development of public policy priorities for the organization in direct consultation with the ED, Board members, and appropriate partners. 
  • Research and prepare draft comments and briefings on proposed policies related to key issues. 
  • Work with NJEJA staff and others to develop public-facing advocacy materials, including but not limited to reports, briefing papers, comment letters, fact sheets, memos of support, and action alerts.
  • Engage and educate representatives from public agencies, partner organizations, and policymakers on environmental and climate justice issues.

Partnerships and Ally Engagement – 30%

  • Collaborate with existing partners and coalitions in support of key issues, and work to cultivate new allies.
  • Cultivate strategic relationships and influential partnerships to further NJEJA objectives on priority issues.
  • Attend and participate in designated local, statewide, and/or national coalition meetings, representing the interests of NJEJA and its members.
  • Help organize convenings and facilitate meetings with stakeholders and policymakers as assigned.
  • Assist in fundraising efforts related to assigned issue areas.
  • Engage interns, volunteers, consultants, and other affiliates on specific projects and priority areas.

Communications and Public Speaking – 15%

  • Represent NJEJA at public-facing events such as public hearings, press events, national conferences, panels, and webinars as assigned.
  • Work with our Communications Team to develop social media and earned media strategies.
  • Conduct written and verbal outreach and promotions on priority issues and campaigns.

A good candidate will not necessarily have expertise in every area listed but will have knowledge covering most of the below and expertise in some.

  • Environmental and climate justice subject-matter knowledge through education, work, or volunteer experience.
  • Deep connection with an environmental justice or overburdened community.

Salary and Benefits

This is a full-time, grant-funded, non-exempt position with competitive benefits, matched 401k, and paid holidays. The starting salary will range from $60-75k yearly, depending on experience. This is a full-time, grant-funded, non-exempt position with medical, dental, and vision benefits as well as paid holidays. The starting salary will range from $50-60k yearly, depending on experience. There is a 90-day probationary period, and some benefits will not take effect until the end of that period. There is ample opportunity for professional development and growth within the organization. NJEJA maintains a flexible work environment that prioritizes our staff’s social, emotional, and physical well-being.

About the Organization:

We work in collaboration with front-line community groups, social and environmental justice groups, foundations, government agencies, and other coalitions to develop policies and practices that benefit New Jersey’s most vulnerable communities.

 

Role Overview

NJEJA is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Operations Manager to oversee special projects and crucial aspects of the day-to-day operations of the organization with autonomy and accountability. The Operations Manager will be an integral part of a team of staff, members, volunteers, and allies working together to protect overburdened communities from the legacy of harmful pollution and the threats of climate disasters. The Operations Manager will report directly to the Executive Director.

 

You Are

This position is ideal for a person who utilizes emotional intelligence, deep-listening, and story-telling in their practice and demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to environmental and climate justice. We invite experienced organizers, community activists, and applicants from environmental and climate impacted communities are strongly encouraged to apply.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong, demonstrated commitment to environmental and/or social justice
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, strong writing skills are required
  • Detail-oriented and able to follow through on work until completion
  • Project management experience is a plus
  • Ability to prioritize and advance several projects simultaneously, while maintaining focus on day to day operations
  • Sound technical skills across a variety of platforms and programs
  • Great interpersonal skills and a sense of humor are a plus
  • Versatile and flexible with strong problem-solving abilities especially in changing circumstances
  • 2-4 years experience in environmental justice, community development, urban studies, social movements, OR degree in a related field

 

Responsibilities 

  • Work closely with the Executive Director to understand and operate from the mission and values of the organization
  • Board Relations: Help prepare packets for board meetings, schedule Board committee meetings, communicate with board members to collect documentation, etc.
  • Donor Relations: Assist with preparation of first drafts of grant applications and report-backs. Manage timelines and documentation for grants and report backs
  • Technology: Work with database, website, social media, Google Suite, and more
  • Administrative: Help manage receipts and payments, scheduling, meetings, proofreading, phone banking, etc.
  • Programs: managing aspects of membership campaigns, fundraising campaigns, conferences, events, and other special projects
  • Supervise volunteers and consultants
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Salary and Benefits

This is a full-time, permanent position with vacation and generous benefits. Salary is 45-50k yearly depending on experience. The position is currently remote but may be in-office in the future, so New Jersey residence or the ability and willingness to move to NJ is required.

The  Social Media Consultant will craft and implement an online media strategy to amplify NJEJA advocacy and organizing work, elevate the voices of its members and increase community engagement. The Social Media Consultant will work with the NJEJA staff and membership to develop and broadcast our brand and narrative.

This position is ideal for a person who utilizes emotional intelligence, deep-listening, and story-telling in their practice and demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to environmental and social justice. A good candidate would have experience in social media management, media work, strong persuasive writing, and effective communication skills. They would be able to thrive both in team settings and in independent work, be highly self-motivated, and able to multitask, organize, plan, prioritize, and perform assigned duties with minimal supervision.

 

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with writing, reviewing, editing, and placing pieces for online publication.
  • Developing and executing online organizing campaign strategies tied to our policy platforms and education campaigns, with the Communications Committee.
  • Communicating with NJEJA team using online mediums like email, zoom, SMS, etc.
  • Making regular website and social media updates of current and important news and events that relate to our work and campaigns.
  • Facilitating and managing digital communication with our members, partners, and funders utilizing Powerbase CiviCRM; updating and running reports from database to assist in targeted outreach.
  • Creating and managing email blasts, online petitions, and social media advertising campaigns.
  • Developing and executing digital ads that complement NJEJA’s off-line organizing
  • Creating graphics and digital visual content to communicate our message.
  • Training and supporting NJEJA staff and members on how to best use social media tools to elevate our core messages.
  • Attending and supporting organizational events by providing real-time content (e.g., live-tweeting, Facebook Livestream) to elevate the organization’s work.
  • Building digital partnerships with other like-minded organizations.
  • Acting as a liaison for the organization on social media platforms.
  • Managing and analyzing key metrics to measure the performance of NJEJA’ s digital work.

 

Required Experience and Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of experience using and managing social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram) to run environmental justice campaigns.
  • Strong writing, editing, communications, and presentation skills.
  • A high degree of comfort in managing multiple tasks and deadlines, and working in a fluid and fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to social and environmental justice, collaborative processes, and the participation and leadership of low-wealth Black, Indigenous people of color, environmental and front-line communities, and their organizations.
  • Knowledge of (or experience of) the challenges faced by overburdened environmental justice communities.
  • Sense of humor.

 

Preferred

  • Experience working in a Communications department: writing public-facing materials (email blasts, social media posts, press releases, etc.) and working on digital campaigns that complement offline efforts.
  • Experience placing op-eds and thought pieces in earned media publications.
  • Bilingual or multilingual
  • Ability to write and copy edit public-facing materials.
  • Knowledge of other key issue areas such as housing rights and/or racial and economic justice.

 

Skills

A basic familiarity with some of the following or their related counterparts will be major assets to this position:

  • HTML and website management experience.
  • Graphic design (example: Canva, Adobe)
  • Video editing and photo (example: iMovie, Premiere Rush, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop)
  • Knowledge of digital campaign software and CRMs (example: CiviCRM)
  • Knowledge of Facebook ads.

 

Salary

This is a project-based consultant position that will pay $20-40 hourly depending on skill and experience. The number of hours per month may vary (but can be standardized if the consultant wishes) and will not exceed 30.
