Role Overview
New Jersey Environmental Justice Alliance (NJEJA) seeks a passionate and experienced individual to lead the work of our Environmental Opportunities Center (EOC). The EOC is the recently launched iteration of our Green Careers program and functions to illuminate pathways in environmental education and environmentally sustainable careers for students and adults from across New Jersey. Reporting directly to the Deputy Director, this manager-level position will be key in co-designing and leading workshops and trainings designed to prepare participants for entry into the green economy, including clean energy, energy efficiency, green infrastructure, tree planting, and more. The EOC manager will develop and maintain the partnerships needed to facilitate trainings and map out the path to success for each participant, including developing relationships with unions and trade schools. We are looking for someone who is both excited about environmental justice and who finds purpose in mentorship, coaching, and building long-term potential in others. The EOC Manager supervises the EOC Coordinator in implementing the Center’s programmatic goals.

We are seeking a candidate with proven experience in workforce development and/or youth development, relationship and coalition building, program development, and program recruitment. Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the NJEJA staff and key partners to design and deliver workforce training modules aligned with environmental justice priorities and local green job opportunities (e.g., clean energy, green infrastructure, tree planting and urban forestry, and healthy homes assessments).
- Adapt curriculum to meet the needs of youth and adult learners, with emphasis on interactive and accessible lesson planning. Incorporate strategies to ensure that students not only gain technical skills but are also empowered, inspired, and supported throughout their learning journey.
- Lead NJEJA’s youth development efforts by collaborating with schools, youth organizations, and other entities to recruit and retain program participants from target communities. Foster a supportive, inclusive, and motivating environment, encouraging participants to set and achieve long-term personal and professional goals.
- Connect students with entry points to union apprenticeships and trade schools.
- Support partnerships with high schools, community colleges, universities, training providers, unions, and employers to build strong career pathways for participants. Work to build a sustainable network of mentors and industry professionals who can support the growth and development of participants beyond the program.
- Coordinate with staff to shape and grow the organization’s environmental opportunities and initiatives. Play a leadership role in shaping program strategies that prioritize both environmental justice and the personal development of youth and adults in underrepresented communities.
- Create opportunities for professional development and skill-building for participants, offering regular feedback and mentorship that promotes their growth within the green economy.
- Work with Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, CiviCRM database, WordPress website, social media, and more. Utilize technology to enhance communication, collaboration, and the sharing of resources for both staff and participants.

NJEJA seeks a Policy Fellow to support its environmental justice policy and advocacy efforts. This is an early-career, temporary position intended to provide hands-on experience in public policy and community engagement. Responsibilities
- Lead NJEJA’s policy efforts around energy transmission and grid reliability; research issue areas such as price increases, AI data centers, and transmission impacts of new renewable projects.
- Monitor actions taken by the NJ Board of Public Utilities and manage tracking, permits, and decisions.
- Support Director of Policy’s work around NJ EJ Law permit and re-permit application tracking.
- Acquire knowledge of cumulative impacts and mapping tools such as EJ Screen and the DEP’s EJ map tool.
- Assist in tracking environmental and climate policy developments at the state and local levels.
- Help prepare research briefs, bill markups, fact sheets, comment letters, memos, etc.
- Support the development of NJEJA’s policy and campaign materials.
- Represent NJEJA in coalitions, working groups, and public forums as assigned.
- Participate in community engagement efforts to inform and shape the organization’s policy priorities.
- Build cross-sector alliances with individuals and organizations working in Labor, Faith, Social Justice, and other areas aligned with our organizational values and approach.
- Attend occasional meetings, events, and hearings in NJ and regionally.

Required Experience and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, Public Policy, or a related field; a Master’s degree or current enrollment in a graduate program is a plus. We also welcome applicants who have completed a degree and plan to pursue further graduate education.

- Demonstrated ability to collaborate across teams to ensure alignment across policy and community engagement efforts.
- Prior experience in policy, advocacy, organizing, or public interest work (internships or volunteer work included).

Role Overview
New Jersey Environmental Justice Alliance (NJEJA) is seeking a highly organized Operations Manager to support the organization’s internal operations and programmatic needs. This position splits time between managing special projects, including grants and campaigns, and providing administrative, communications, and operational support to ensure the organization runs efficiently. Reporting directly to the Senior Director of Operations, this role will increase NJEJA’s operational efficiency and provide administrative support to programmatic teams as needed.
You Are
This position is ideal for someone early in their career with strong communication, organization, and administrative skills and a passion for environmental and climate justice. A good candidate would have experience or demonstrated interest in clerical work, project coordination, and nonprofit operations. They should be self-motivated, able to manage multiple priorities, and comfortable working both independently and collaboratively. Strong planning, time management, and follow-through are essential, as is the ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities
Operations & Administrative Support (75%)
- Work in-person at NJEJA’s Newark office 4-5 days a week. Maintain general office organization and inventory; check and distribute mail; answer the phone and manage the organizational email account; order and restock office supplies as needed.
- Establish and maintain efficient and practical physical and virtual filing systems.
- Assist with finance-related tasks such as receipts, payments, reimbursements, and grant documentation management.
- Coordinate with Senior Director of Operations to support NJEJA’s programmatic teams with logistics and ordering for events, tabling, conferences, and workshops.
- Support the Senior Director of Operations with day-to-day communications as requested, including proofreading external communications and preparing first drafts of newsletters.
- Work alongside Senior Director of Operations to organize and coordinate staff meetings, events, and retreats (virtual and in-person).
- Manage scheduling, calendar coordination, meeting logistics, and receipt submission for Executive Director.
- Utilize and help maintain digital platforms such as CiviCRM, WordPress, Asana, Google Workspace, Zoom, and Slack.
- Other operational tasks as assigned.
Grants & Special Projects (25%)
- Manage an assigned portfolio of federal, state, and high-priority grants, tracking deadlines, outcomes, and deliverables in accordance with agreement guidelines.
- Coordinate the reporting and submission process for assigned projects under the supervision of Senior Director of Operations.
- Support logistics for special projects under purview, including campaigns, conferences, workshops, and events.
- Document meetings, decisions, and next steps; serve as primary point of contact for grant partners, subcontractors, and internal staffing team.
- Maintain accurate records of contracts, timelines, and other materials.
Preferred Experience and Qualifications
- Demonstrated commitment to environmental and/or climate justice. Experience living or working in an underserved community is a plus.
- 2+ years of experience in nonprofit operations, administrative support, or project management, OR a degree in a related field.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with experience proofreading and preparing external communications.
- High level of organization and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities independently with minimal supervision
- Comfortable using newer technology such as Google Workspace, Asana, Zoom, and Slack.

Founded in 2002 by a group of grassroots activists and advocates from North, South, and Central New Jersey, NJEJA has advanced Environmental Justice advocacy longer than any other New Jersey statewide group. NJEJA is developing our organizing and advocacy by expanding our team to include an Environmental Justice Program Manager.
Role Overview:

The main function of the EJ Program Manager will be to work in tandem with NJEJA staff, supporters, members, and others to further education, advocacy, and policies that prioritize justice and equity for New Jersey’s Low-Income Communities and Communities of Color, especially those already overburdened with pollution and at risk from climate disaster.
Core Responsibilities
This is a generalized breakdown of the types of activities the EJ Manager will be asked to perform and how much of their overall time will be used in that area of activity. This may change according to the needs of the organization.
Community Engagement – 35%
- Assist with the identification and engagement of individuals and groups in Environmental Justice communities throughout New Jersey.
- Interact directly with individuals and groups interested in technical assistance and/or training in key Environmental Justice and Climate Justice issues and campaigns.
- Develop and deliver educational resources on environmental and climate justice.
- Engage community partners in an iterative way to provide up-to-date information to frontline communities and to get feedback on legislative and policy proposals from community-based partners.
- Create opportunities for community-based partners and organizations to have a seat at the table as policies are shaped and moved forward, recognizing the principle that “Environmental Justice demands the right to participate as equal partners at every level of decision-making, including needs assessment, planning, implementation, enforcement, and evaluation.”
- Support NJEJA members and their communities in environmental and climate campaigns.
Advocacy 25%
- Apply NJEJA’s Environmental and Climate Justice Lens to Public Policy.
- Remain apprised of emerging environmental and climate-related policy (at the state, federal and local levels), flagging key policies with NJEJA Staff and Board for internal discussion.
- Support development of public policy priorities for the organization in direct consultation with the ED, Board members, and appropriate partners.
- Research and prepare draft comments and briefings on proposed policies related to key issues.
- Work with NJEJA staff and others to develop public-facing advocacy materials, including but not limited to reports, briefing papers, comment letters, fact sheets, memos of support, and action alerts.
- Engage and educate representatives from public agencies, partner organizations, and policymakers on environmental and climate justice issues.
Partnerships and Ally Engagement 25%
- Collaborate with existing partners and coalitions in support of key issues, and work to cultivate new allies.
- Cultivate strategic relationships and influential partnerships to further NJEJA objectives on priority issues.
- Attend and participate in designated local, statewide, and/or national coalition meetings, representing the interests of NJEJA and its members.
- Help organize convenings and facilitate meetings with stakeholders and policymakers as assigned.
- Assist in fundraising efforts related to assigned issue areas.

Communications and Public Speaking 15%

The Social Media Consultant will craft and implement an online media strategy to amplify NJEJA advocacy and organizing work, elevate the voices of its members and increase community engagement. The Social Media Consultant will work with the NJEJA staff and membership to develop and broadcast our brand and narrative.

- Two or more years of experience using and managing social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram) to run environmental justice campaigns.
- Strong writing, editing, communications, and presentation skills.
- A high degree of comfort in managing multiple tasks and deadlines, and working in a fluid and fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to social and environmental justice, collaborative processes, and the participation and leadership of low-wealth Black, Indigenous people of color, environmental and front-line communities, and their organizations.
- Knowledge of (or experience of) the challenges faced by overburdened environmental justice communities.
- Sense of humor.
Preferred
- Experience working in a Communications department: writing public-facing materials (email blasts, social media posts, press releases, etc.) and working on digital campaigns that complement offline efforts.
- Experience placing op-eds and thought pieces in earned media publications.
- Bilingual or multilingual
- Ability to write and copy edit public-facing materials.
- Knowledge of other key issue areas such as housing rights and/or racial and economic justice.
Skills
A basic familiarity with some of the following or their related counterparts will be major assets to this position:
- HTML and website management experience.
- Graphic design (example: Canva, Adobe)
- Video editing and photo (example: iMovie, Premiere Rush, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop)
- Knowledge of digital campaign software and CRMs (example: CiviCRM)
- Knowledge of Facebook ads.
Salary
This is a project-based consultant position that will pay $20-40 hourly depending on skill and experience. The number of hours per month may vary (but can be standardized if the consultant wishes) and will not exceed 30.
