In accordance with New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Administrative Order No. 2021-25\, Sims will hold a virtual public information session for the purpose of receiving oral and/or written comments on its Preconstruction Air Permit Application submitted to NJDEP on January 23\, 2023. The information session will be held on April 12\, 2023\, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. For instructions on how to register for and join the session\, please contact Sims by email at SMMNA.Permits@simsmm.com . \nSims will also continue to receive and consider written comments for up to 30 days after the information session. Per the Administrative Order No. 2021-25\, Sims will accept written comments for sixty (60) days beginning on March 13\, 2023 and ending at 4:00 PM on May 12\, 2023. Comments should be addressed to: Sims Trenton Facility EJ\, Sims Metal\, 1 Linden Ave E.\, Jersey City\, NJ 07305. Comments may also be forwarded electronically to SMMNA.Permits@simsmm.com . Sims will respond to all timely-submitted comments. \nSims currently operates a “feeder yard” at the Trenton Facility. The pending permit application includes all Material Handling operations (related to recyclable metals) performed by mobile equipment at the facility. The requested preconstruction air permit application was submitted in accordance with NJDEP Compliance Advisory #2021-03\, related to material handling activities at scrap metal handling and recycling facilities. In particular\, the application includes the existing material handling activities associated with the yard’s operation. \nAt the facility\, Sims purchases recyclable metal materials and transfers those materials to other facilities (including other Sims locations) for processing and/or shipping the separated metals (e.g.\, steel) as commodities to steel mills\, etc. for use in making new steel products. Metal recycling is an essential industry supplying materials needed for the manufacture of new steel and other metal products\, preserves natural resources\, reduces energy consumption and is an important element in the fight against climate change and for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. \nInterested parties are encouraged to review the complete Preconstruction Air Permit Applications which can be accessed on-line at https://www.simsmm.com/permits/ .
