NJEJA provides direct leadership and support
on a host of environmental efforts throughout
EJ communities in New Jersey.
We are actively supporting the campaign for
“Good Jobs, Healthy Neighborhoods, & a Clean
Environment” in Newark, NJ, as a steering committee
member organization of the Coalition for Healthy
Ports. The objective of this campaign includes
equitable compensation for the city and
environmental mitigation policies, like a ban
on dirty pre-2007 diesel trucks and Zero
Emissions standard for port operations.
NJEJA urges political leaders and major employers to
seek community input on public policies such as
climate resiliency to reach a common understanding of
what local communities need.
We are demonstrating civic engagement through our
Sandy Climate Justice Roundtables and participation
in the Newark Resiliency Action Plan (Newark RAP) .
NJEJA recognizes the rights of residents in EJ
neighborhoods to assert their vision for the future of
NJEJA has developed outreach and education programs,
like our Environmental Justice Leadership Training,
empowering communities with information that could
save lives and reduce illness in our neighborhoods. We
have engaged high school students from EJ
communities in monitoring air quality and conducting
truck counts, to raise awareness of air quality issues in
urban neighborhoods where large amounts of pollution
are a burden.
Our goal is to decrease concentrations of deadly
pollutants in the air that New Jersey residents breathe
and gases that cause global warming.
We craft model legislation for EJ communities
throughout NJ and statewide .
Many New Jersey neighborhoods are besieged

communities. NJEJA is committed to bringing
people together to develop public policies,
actions, and programs to prevent and stop these
detrimental impacts. We are actively involved in
the effort to pass the Environmental Justice &
Cumulative Impacts Ordinance in the City of
